Actionism in syntax and semantics
- In this paper, we present a view of syntax which is compatible with a perspective on perception called actionism. First we argue for the extension of the actionist view, which has been developed in the domain of low-level perception/action, to natural language on the basis that the motivating phenomena are parallel. We then show that the relevant natural language phenomena include both semantic/pragmatic and syntactic issues and, on this basis, call for a dynamic conception of the `grammar' that integrates both conceptualisation and syntactic licensing under uniform formal assumptions operating at the level of agent coordination rather than intra-individual mechanisms.
